  • Cooking for a Cause: Community & Charity Cookbooks of Cayuga County

    Dating back to the late 1800s, community groups throughout Cayuga County followed a national trend and produced a wide variety of cookbooks for charity.  Cayuga County Historian Ruth Bradley will present an overview of these grassroots community projects, highlighting the evolution of meals and menus, collectively compiled to raise money in support of a range of social and community initiatives. Culinary concoctions ranging from turtle soup to ham loaf to microwaved dinners illustrate the evolution of food availability and preparation, household management, and the changing role of women as food providers and family sustainers.

    This exhibit looks beyond the traditional Women’s Suffrage narrative and explores the history behind the movement that made New York State such an important place in the fight for Women’s Suffrage. Featured themes include, Woman Suffrage before 1848, Women’s Rights Activity up to 1848 and the Seneca Falls and Rochester Conventions, Pop Culture Suffrage, Anti-Suffrage, and Race and Diversity. The traveling exhibit was created and brought to you by the South Central Regional Library Council, Empire State Library Network and Digital Public Library of America. The exhibit runs until June 15.
