Celebrate Booktoberfest this October with these book and brew pairings featuring brews from local breweries including Shep’s Brewing Co., Next Chapter Brewpub, and Prison City Pub and Brewery. Please drink and read responsibly.
Prison City Pub and Brewery 28 State Street, Auburn NY
Tart (humor) with touches of sweetness and passion (fruit) describes Prison City Passion Between The Wheats and Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. Or try Chuckerman Makes a Movie for a smart and funny story with a touch of romance.
Seward’s Folly by Lee A Farrow is the obvious pairing for Prison City Seward’s Folly, a blonde Ale with a dry, clean, toasted malt backbone and citrusy finish.
Get a little corny with Maria Semple’s quirky novel Where’d You Go, Bernadette or Fleishman Is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner (soon to be tv series) and Prison City Crispy Boys, an American Light Lager made with 30% flaked corn in the mash.
Next Chapter Brewpub 100 Genesee Street, Suite B
Death and Other Happy Endings by Melanie Cantor and One Day in December by Josie Silver are smooth and sweet just like Next Chapter’s Chapter Barrel Aged Cherry Vanilla Porter. Aged with sweet cherries, this porter has a nice bourbon nose with hints of cherry and vanilla.
Does the fall weather have you wanting to try something darker? Next Chapter’s Chapter Dark Saison, a darker beer with chocolate and coffee notes, pairs perfectly with Sharon Bolton’s thriller The Craftsman or the dark suspense of The Whisper Man by Alex North.
Keep it light with this book and brew pairing of The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman and Next Chapter’s Chapter Blondie Blonde Ale. This easy drinking, light beer matches the light and witty tone of Waxman’s novel. Also try the charming Meet Me at the Museum by Anne Youngson for a quick, crisp read.
Shep’s Brewing Co. 132 Genesee Street
Shep’s Workman is the true working man or woman’s porter. Coming in at 5.0% this porter has a nice roasty flavor but finishes smooth as silk. It pairs well with A Craftsman’s Legacy by Eric Gorges or Land of Wolves, the newest in Craig Johnson’s series about the hard-working high plains sheriff Walt Longmire.
Get blown away with Shep’s Hurricane Hailey Blonde Ale and The Hurricane Sisters by Dorothea Benton Frank. Both are light, crip, and will have you dreaming of summer.
The Bone Keeper by Luca Veste – a mystery combined with an urban legend about a killer in the forest makes for a creepy supernatural tale. Pair this book with Shep’s Bonesaw Black IPA and sip in suspense!
