The Power of Historical Storytelling: Author Talk with Karen Foresti Hempson
May 22 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT
Free
Join local author Karen Foresti Hempson at Seymour Library for a behind-the-scenes look at her new historical fiction book, Shellback. Inspired by real people from Utica who lived through the Great Depression and World War II, Shellback centers on a young boy, born to Italian immigrant parents, who endures tough times with the singular goal of escaping poverty and ends up becoming a sailor during WWII.
Hempson will discuss how she used oral histories, diaries, news reports, and personal accounts, to capture the challenges of the 1930s and 1940s. The book discussion will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Seymour Library.
Karen Foresti Hempson is a retired teacher and former college lecturer in social studies. She has published numerous written works over the years, including the book Bean Pickers, American Immigrant Portraits (2019).
