Sensory Kits are Now Available in the Family Space

Seymour Library is excited to announce that Sensory Kits are now available in the Family Space, thanks to funding from the 2025 FLLS Family Literacy Mini-Grant. These kits are designed to support children who may need a little extra comfort while visiting the library or participating in programs.

The materials in the Sensory Kits include:

  • a weighted lap blanket,
  • noise-cancelling ear muffs,
  • sunglasses,
  • fidget toys,
  • a sensory bottle,
  • a chew toy (this is yours to keep),
  • and a sand timer.

Kits are available for in-library use and can be borrowed and returned at the Family Space desk.

Family Space Librarian Jill Hand spearheaded this latest initiative, stating, “Our goal is to make the library a welcoming place for everyone, including young visitors who are neurodivergent.” Jill’s expertise in childhood development was crucial in the decision to provide tools to help our young visitors who are on the spectrum, with her noting, “A sensory kit can help in moments of stress. Sometimes the world, even the library, can feel overwhelming, and these tools can help to provide comfort and calm.”

By offering these kits, Seymour Library aims to create a more inclusive, accessible, and supportive environment for families. The items in each kit can help reduce anxiety, ease sensory overload, and make experiences like storytime more enjoyable for both children and their caregivers.
