If music is your love language, we hope you can share a song that brings back fond memories filled with card catalogs, storytimes, and the smell of books! Speaking of music and library memories, how about a song by one of our local bands?

Auburn’s talented Terry Cuddy and Beth Beer Cuddy recorded the video to “Decades” right here in our library! This video is sure to be a delight!

And, we were fortunate enough to have Terry Cuddy share his library story with us and what the library means to him. For Terry, the library has been more than just a building with books; it has been a constant presence in his life, and he is excited to share some of his memories.

What Seymour Library means to Terry:

“I used to go to the Seymour Library many afternoons on my way home from West Middle School. I loved opening the big doors of the original front entrance.  I would primarily go to the library to do homework because it was a place that I could concentrate on a different level than I could at home.

Seymour Library was also a sanctuary that I could explore the world through almanacs, read Irish folk tales, and read a book of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s journals. The Seymour Library invited me to learn. This fostered an understanding that libraries are essential, and they were the building I was drawn to when I was in college.

Years later, I would return to Auburn to settle. My wife Beth eventually became a school librarian, and we both have performed or read at the Seymour Library for public events. A couple years ago, we were allowed to shoot a music video for our band, A Cast of Thousands. It was a video for the song Decades and I wanted it to take place at the library. The concept was part inspired by Wim Wenders’ film Wings of Desire and part inspired by Tears for Fears’ video Head Over Heels. In both story lines, the library played an important role. The architecture and aisles of books of the Seymour Library were perfect for our video.

Auburn is so lucky to have the Seymour Library, and I am so lucky to live here.”

We hope that Terry’s story and video have inspired you to stop by to share your library story!
