National Family Literacy Day® is celebrated on November 1st each year and is a kickoff to National Family Literacy Month. National Family Literacy Month is a time to recognize the importance of reading together as a family. Research shows that introducing children to books at a young age helps build essential language and literacy skills.

Why is reading aloud to kids important?

  • Improves language and listening skills
  • Builds empathy
  • Activates and empowers imagination
  • Creates a lifelong love of reading
  • Facilities difficult conversations
  • is FUN!

At Seymour Library, we support families on their reading journey with:

  • Playaways for audiobooks on the go
  • Wonderbooks with built-in audio to support early literacy and struggling readers
  • A collection of bilingual books in English and Spanish
  • Plus, we have an Easy Reader Collection categorized by reading level
  • …and a slew of graphic novels that give children a reading experience that can look and feel more approachable.

Join us for special-themed storytimes from IMAGINE Storytime to Books & Babies with Miss Jill and Miss Chris!

Not sure where to start?

Our Family Services Librarian, Miss Jill, has a few recommendations to get you started!

Make storytime at home fun with interactive picture books for young children!

Interactive picture books encourage participation and heighten your child’s engagement with the story. By combining text, illustrations, and interactive elements, these books provide a fun and engaging way for children to learn and explore.

A few favorites include:

  • There Is a Dragon In Your Book by Tom Fletcher
  • Crunch the Shy Dinosaur by Cirocco Dunlap
  • The Duck Never Blinks by Alex Latimer

Looking for a fun way to incorporate family literacy with older children?

Try creating a family ‘book to movie club’. Read a chapter book together as a family and then have a family movie night to watch the movie!  It is also fun to talk about how the book and movie differ and which one each family member liked better.

Some favorite chapter book/movie combos are:

  • Matilda by Roald Dahl
  • Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo
  • Diary Of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Maybe you have a teenager?

Try choosing a book that you and your teen can read or listen to together (or separately).  Make a plan to chat weekly about the book. This is a great opportunity to use books and literacy to connect with your teen and explore issues together.

Here are a couple of book authors you might enjoy with your teen:
